Super Whatevr - don’t you wanna be glad? Album Review
Review by Emily Lutz
Alternative Rock group Super Whatevr is back with a whole new style. On February 7th, the new record “don’t you wanna be glad? releases and after two full years since their debut album “Never Nothing,” fans can finally be relieved of their anticipation. Although the long wait was antagonizing, it feels like lead vocalist Sky McKee has found where he wants to be in music and you can feel the growth in the album versus where they were two years ago. The album kicks off with the single “better.” This was the first track to be released from the album and I truly believe there’s no other song that fits more well to kick things off. This boppy and catchy tune talks about how the past may be bad but “it feels good to be better.” When I first heard “yours truly.” I was really drawn in by the hard hitting yet fun verses. No doubt this one is in my top favorites of the album. The album continues into “so am i.” which is the last single release before the album drop. This song has reassuring lyrics like “Are you faking every smile? So am I.” that shows that you may be going through things but you’re never alone. “sober.” sounds like it would work perfectly in a romantic comedy when there is a love at first sight type of moment. “I wanna be cool.” features Lost Boy. This poppy track may not be quite up my lane. However, if you’re super into pop music, this song is perfect for you. Closing out the first half of the album is “unhealthy.” This track gives off vibes from their album “Never Nothing” with an extra kick of punk. This one is definitely my favorite off the record.
The second half of the album starts with “eternity complex.” It is a spoken word about a past relationship that turned toxic and ended bad, and it completely hits hard for anyone that has been through something like that. Next up is “life(i want u).” This electronic track is about relationships that may not be completely perfect but still wanting this person in your life. “everything’s new, everything hurts.” is another one of Super Whatevr’s most poppy songs, but it’s not a bad song in the slightest, definitely a jam. The sound of “wesleepwedream.” goes well with the name of the song perfectly as it truly feels like being in a dreamstate. Although short, this song about being a completely toxic relationship does not fall that way. “holy anxious.” is a soft track that shows the spiritual growth of vocalist Sky McKee touching upon his religion. The album ends perfectly with the single “melancholyism.” This one is another personal favorite and after listening to the whole album I love it even more. A lot of the album talks about the past toxic relationships Sky McKee has been through but in the end we have his song for his wife. It shows that no matter how bad and ugly things may seem now, there’s always a rainbow after the storm. “don’t you wanna be glad?” is the perfect example of how things may change and evolve but it can most certainly be a great thing. Sky McKee states, “I learned that there is more to emotional growth than just cutting off toxic people, it takes healing those wounds in order to be genuinely glad.”
