Ice Nine Kills - Undead & Unplugged At The Overlook Hotel' Acoustic EP Review
Review by Alicia Dittman
For the fans of Ice Nine Kills who did not get to see them acoustic at the very historic “Stanley Hotel,” they have delivered an EP for us. The band held a special fan event at the Colorado based hotel, and if you’re a fan of Ice Nine Kills, you know what all that hotel means to horror movie fans and the members of the band. “Undead & Unplugged: Live From The Overlook Hotel” has 5 acoustic songs on it.
Along with the EP, the band has made “The Undead & Unplugged Unlock Maze, which allows you to run around the Maze at The Overlook Hotel while little Jack Nicholson heads chase you around, quite like pacman. The band decided to release the EP to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of “The Shining,” and also had Stanley Kubrick’s grandson, Sam provide guest vocals on the original track recording of “Enjoy Your Slay,” which is featured on this EP acoustically.
The EP features the songs “Savages,” which is based on “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “Thank God its Friday,” which is very apparently about the movie “Friday the 13th,” “A Grave Mistake,” which is about anti-hero film “The Crow”, “Love Bites,” which is about “An American Werewolf In London,” and finally “Enjoy Your Slay” which is based on the movie and book by Stephen King, “The Shining,” Hearing Spencer’s stripped down vocals definitely gives these songs more spooky vibes and you can really feel the meanings behind them. Spencer’s voice goes well with the original tracks of Ice Nine Kills songs and acoustic versions as well.
I can’t wait to see what Ice Nine Kills has in store for the rest of 2020 and even further into the future. They are a band that is so very excellent with imagery in their songs, and who else makes whole albums based on books and horror films?!
