Bring Me The Horizon - Parasite Eve Review

Review by Emily Lutz

With the world at a standstill, artists and bands are forced to change the way they have done everything in the past. This includes Bring Me The Horizon who released their newest single “Parasite Eve” on June 25th. Over the past month the group has documented the remote creative process and released it on Youtube. From the writing process through the making of their music video and everything in between, Bring Me The Horizon has given us an inside look at the way they adapted and their approach to a “new normal.” With a sound heavily influenced by the video game Doom Eternal, Bring Me The Horizon gives us a track that much resembles a mix of the Amo era and the future sound the band seems to be bringing. With a personal opinion, I’d say this song is “sick”- no pun intended. “Parasite Eve” was actually written on the eve of the Covid-19 outbreak.

As if the band predicted what the world would soon look like, the song started to become a reality of the conditions we are unfortunately living in. Lyrically, frontman Oli Sykes asks, “When we forget the infection, will we remember the lesson?” That question in itself should make everyone really think about the effects of what’s going on around us. With a music video to go along with the single, Bring Me The Horizon really proves that anything is possible The video was iInspired from different video games, comic books, and anime and based on masks made by a friend to look like they were all infected. Each member was recorded individually to comply with social distancing guidelines.

Also, due to lockdown limitations, the band worked with minimal crew, equipment, and budget. In reference to the video, Sykes states, “One thing lockdown has proven to us is that we can make shit happen with a lot less resources than we actually need.”
